What was previously our home for Atlassian Design Guidelines has now transformed into our new home for Atlassian Design System. Our content guidance covers our voice and tone, and the mechanics of our grammar and style. Atlassian Design System packages are available on npm under the @atlaskit scope, along with other Atlassian platform components.

We prepared an empty Atlassian product screen as a canvas for each designer to work in. To help the team carry out our goals, we established a playful, curious, and authentic environment. We solve the common problems for all, small and large, to provide a solid foundation that consumers can confidently build upon.

Improving the design and content of atlassian.design is just the tip of the iceberg. Beyond the surface of the redesign, our engineers have also rearchitected the foundation of what our site is built upon. We improved our infrastructure with Gatsby, integrating with Contentful. The new site is faster, more reliable, and aligns with Atlassian platform standards.
As a platform team, investing in our infrastructure will help us as we continue to scale. In many organizations, designers span multiple teams (or even products!). These shared visual styles and components create harmonious experiences across Atlassian products.

Agile Design
The decision paid off since it resulted in design systems champions embedded across the company. A lot of the time, we’re investigating what products are already doing and testing any system improvements in product screens that have already been designed by product designers. This means we spend a lot of time in Figma evaluating screens for Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Trello, etc.
It’s traditionally been thought of as a cottage industry – a bunch of specialized folks crafting beautiful one-off solutions. Special thanks to Jocelyn Wong for designing the cover illustration. We hope you’re inspired and are just as excited about our team and the future of Atlassian Design System.
We’re excited to share that we achieved everything we strove for, but more importantly, we’re inspired to share everything we’ve discovered along the way. We uncovered a few larger systemic issues, and there were lots of challenges and hurdles we had to overcome. It has been an immense cross-collaborative effort across brand, design, content design, and engineering, and this would not have been possible without our perseverance to play, as a team (one of our core Atlassian values).

We also had a ~3 month rotation program where designers and engineers were taken from their respective products and would work on the Design Platform team to push the system forward. They would contribute heavily while they were on our team, and then return to their original product teams being staunch advocates for the system. The goal of a design system is to scale yourself (and your design team) to build product faster and empower everyone to make better design decisions. At Asana, we’re at the start of our journey to build a holistic design system. I’ve found that reflecting on these lessons has helped us set the team, and the company, up for success so that we deliver the true value of a design system.
Once they’ve done the initial research, the team converges to discuss specs and requirements.
